The Work
Eight questions. What you write is read by your facilitator and nobody else. Not your officer, not your school, not your family, and not in any report. Two of these you do not write down at all.
Week 22 of 23 · Service and Giving Back
When was the last time you did something for somebody who could not do anything back? If you cannot think of one, write that.
What is service supposed to be, if it is not punishment or charity?
- A Hours you owe.
- B Repair. Somebody from a place putting something back into it.
- C People with plenty helping people with nothing.
- D Something that looks good on paper.
What has your area lost? Things that used to be there and are not. Write what you remember.
One thing that needs doing where you live that nobody is doing. Small. Then write who would have to be involved to actually do it.
Two people do the same hours and one keeps showing up after. What made the difference?
- A One had a better attitude at the start.
- B One let somebody there know him while he was doing it.
- C One had more free time.
- D One got paid.
Nobody reads this one. There is somebody younger watching you right now. What are they learning about how a person gets respect?
Nehemiah put families in front of their own houses to build. Why was that smart?
- A It was faster to organize.
- B Every man was building the section his own people lived behind, so nobody had to be convinced to care.
- C It kept them from talking.
- D It was the only way to get materials.
Jesus said whatever you did for the least of these, you did for Him. That means service is not reaching down to somebody. Write what changes if He is actually in the person you are helping.
Nothing you write here goes to your officer, your school or your family.
