Week 9 · Lesson 1
Facing the Shadows: Family, Strife and the Past
Week 9 of 23 · The Cycle of Trauma
What happened in your house that nobody outside ever knew about?
Not the story people tell about your family. The other one.
Everybody has a version they give out. Where they live, who they stay with, who works where. And under that there is the real one, and most people in here have never said the real one out loud to anybody.
Key ConceptWhat Gets Passed Down Does Not Announce Itself
Nobody sat you down and taught you how to handle being hurt, or what a man does when he is scared, or what love is supposed to cost.
You learned all of it by watching, before you were old enough to know you were learning. And what you watched is now running inside you as if you decided it.
Look at how the men in your family handle being disrespected. Look at how the women in your family handle being let down. Now look at what you did the last time either one happened to you.
You are running a program you never installed, and you will run it on your own kids without ever once deciding to.
That is not a curse and it is not an excuse. It is a pattern, and a pattern is something you can see. Once you can see it, you get a say in it for the first time in your life.
Journal Question
Write one thing you do exactly the way somebody in your family does it, that you never chose. Then write whether you want it.
Teaching PointThree Things Families Hand Down Without Saying a Word
In some houses pain gets yelled. In some it goes silent for three days. In some it gets drunk, smoked, or worked to death. In some it gets taken out on whoever is smallest.
You did not pick which one. You caught it. And when yours shows up, that is the one that runs.
If the love you saw came with conditions, you learned love is something you pay for. If it disappeared without warning, you learned to keep a bag packed. If it only showed up when somebody needed something, you learned it comes with a bill.
Then you take that into every relationship you will ever have, including the one with your own kids.
Every family has a list. Things everybody knows and nobody says. And the rule about the list is stronger than any rule anybody said out loud.
That rule is why a man can be forty years old and still not able to say a sentence about something that happened when he was nine.
Activity
Three things. Write what your house handed you for each one. Do not write about anybody else’s fault. Just write what got handed to you, like an inventory.
ScenarioThe Thing You Swore You Would Never Do
There is something you watched growing up and told yourself you would never do it. You were young when you decided it and you meant it more than you have meant most things.
And you have already done a version of it. Maybe smaller. Maybe not.
Here is what people get wrong about that. It does not mean you are him. It means nobody ever showed you the other move, so under pressure your body reached for the only one it had ever seen.
Swearing you will not do something is not a plan. It is a wish. A plan is knowing what you are going to do instead, and having practiced it before the pressure came.
Journal Question
What did you swear you would never do? Write it, and then write the closest you have come. This one stays between you and this page.
Spiritual Takeaway
His family line was full of the same things yours is
Matthew opens the whole New Testament with a list of names, the family line of Jesus, and most people skip it because it reads like a phone book. Look at who is in it.
Abraham lied about his wife twice to save himself. Jacob was a schemer who cheated his own brother. Judah slept with a woman he thought was a prostitute who turned out to be his son’s widow, and that is in the line. Rahab ran a house in a city that got destroyed. David took another man’s wife and then had the man killed to cover it, and their son Solomon is in the line too.
That is the family God chose to come through. Not a clean one. He put Himself inside a bloodline with lies, violence, betrayal and sex scandals in it, on purpose, and He did not edit the list.
So if you have been carrying the idea that your family disqualifies you, that idea is not from Him. He walked into a family exactly like yours and the line stopped being about what came before, because of who showed up in it.
2 Corinthians 5:17 says if anybody is in Christ, there is a new creation. The old is gone. That is not a saying about feeling better. That is about which line you belong to now.
Find out one true thing about the person in your family you understand least. Ask somebody older what happened to them when they were your age. Just listen. You are not fixing anything this week, you are looking at the pattern for the first time.
Take it one week at a time.
