Week 1 of 23 · Identity and Purpose
How long did it last the last time?
Because you have tried this before. Everybody in here has.
There was a stretch where you were doing right. Two weeks, maybe a month. After a funeral, or after something close, or your first month home. You meant it when you said it.
Then something happened, or nothing happened, and you were back.
So how long did it last, and what ended it? Answer that honestly and this lesson will do something for you. Skip it and this is just another hour.

Here is why two weeks is always where it ends.
Everything you are walking away from is giving you something real. Money. People who know your name. Something to do at ten at night. Somewhere you matter.
Willpower says stop. It does not say what to do instead. So you subtract, and now you are sitting in an empty room, and nobody can sit in an empty room for long. You go back to the only place that ever had anything in it.
You are not weak. You have been trying to quit something without trading it for anything.
This will take everything you have. Not most of it. Everything. Anybody who tells you different has never done it.
Journal Question
Name what that life actually gives you. Not what people say it gives you. What you personally would miss on a Tuesday night. Write all of it, and be honest, because the list is the whole problem.

Everything out here puts a price on you, and the price moves every week, which is why you can never rest.
Ephesians 2 says you are saved by grace, through faith, and that it is not from yourself. It is a gift, so that nobody can stand around taking credit for it.
That sounds like good news until you sit with it, because it also means everything you have been doing to prove your worth was never what set it.
That is hard for somebody who built himself on what he can do. If your value comes from what you produce, a bad month takes everything. A body that stops working takes everything. One mistake in front of the wrong people takes everything.
Then the next verse turns it around. It says you are His workmanship, made for good works that were prepared ahead of time for you to do.
So there is still work. The order just flipped. You do not work in order to be worth something. You are worth something, so you work. One of those is a treadmill and the other one is a purpose.
Journal Question
If everything you own was gone tomorrow, and everybody who respects you forgot your name, what is left of you? If the answer is nothing, write nothing. That is the most honest line in this book and it is exactly where God starts.
Teaching PointWho You Keep Around You
Everybody says your circle matters. Nobody tells you how to do that when the circle is your family, your building, and the people who were there when nobody else was.
So here is a way to think about it that is not just cut everybody off.
People you walk with. Going the same direction on purpose. These are rare and you might have none right now.
People you love from a distance. Real love and real history, and they are going somewhere you cannot go. You do not have to hate them and you do not have to announce anything. You just cannot be in the car.
People you carry. Somebody has to reach back or nobody gets out. But you cannot carry somebody while you are still learning to stand up. You will both go down.
Proverbs 13:20 says walk with the wise and become wise, and a companion of fools suffers harm. Look at the word walk. Not admire from far away. Not follow online. Walk means time, being around somebody, and them seeing you on a bad day.
Activity
Put every name in your phone into one of the three. Walk with, love from a distance, carry. Then answer the one that stings. Which one are you, in their phone?
Spiritual Takeaway
He called men in the middle of what they were already doing
Every man Jesus called was busy when He got there. Fishermen were in the boat working. Levi was sitting at his table collecting taxes off his own people, which made him one of the most hated men in his own neighborhood.
Jesus walked up on Levi at the table and said follow me. Luke says he got up, left everything, and went. Then the first thing he did was throw a big dinner at his house and fill it with everybody he used to run with, and the religious crowd stood outside asking why this teacher was eating with people like that.
Notice what did not happen. Nobody got cleaned up first. Nobody was asked to fix his situation before he was wanted. And the men He picked were not the ones anybody would have picked.
Jesus said whoever wants to follow Him has to take up his cross, and that whoever tries to save his own life will lose it, and whoever loses it for His sake will find it. Men hear that and think it means more weight. It is the opposite. He is saying put down the one thing you were never built to carry, which is saving your own life, and follow somebody who already carried it.
And you are still going to fight for this. Every day. It will cost you everything you have, and it is the first fight in your life that is actually worth what it costs.
One thing you have been trying to quit on willpower. Before your feet hit the floor tomorrow, ask God for that one thing out loud. Same thing, seven mornings. Then look at what is different at the end of the week, even if it is small.
Take it one week at a time.
