Week 15 · Lesson 1
Life Skills and Future Planning
Week 15 of 23 · Life Skills and Future Planning
What are you missing that you know you are missing?
An ID. A social security card. A birth certificate. A phone number that stays the same. An address where mail actually reaches you.
Small things. And every single door in your life opens with one of them, and almost nobody has all of them at once.
Key ConceptMost People Do Not Lose on Effort
You can want something all the way and still lose it on logistics.
Missed the appointment because the bus took ninety minutes. Missed the call because the number changed. Missed the deadline because the letter went to an address you have not lived at in two years. Showed up on the wrong day because nobody wrote it down.
Nobody counts those as failures of wanting it. But they end up in the same place, and after enough of them a person stops trying and calls it fate.
The stuff that decides your life is boring, and boring is exactly why nobody warned you about it.
Journal Question
Write the last three things that fell through. For each one, write whether it fell through because you did not want it, or because of something boring.
Teaching PointThe Five That Matter First
ID, social, birth certificate. Everything else waits on these. Get them in a folder that lives in one place that is not your pocket.
Every time your number changes, everybody trying to reach you stops being able to. Jobs, court, programs, people who would help. A number that stays is worth more than a better phone.
Mail is how the system talks to you, and it does not care that you moved. Missing a letter is how people end up with warrants over something that could have been handled with a phone call.
Before you agree to anything, know how you are getting there and how long it actually takes, not how long it takes in a car you do not have.
A calendar, a note on the wall, an alarm. Not because you have a bad memory. Because you are carrying more than your memory is meant to hold, and the plan is to stop running your whole life out of your head.
Activity
Five things. Check off what you already have. Then write the one you are missing that would unlock the most, and write the actual next step for getting it. Not the goal. The step.
ScenarioThe Appointment
Somebody has one thing to do on Thursday at ten. It matters. It is the kind of appointment that changes what the next six months look like.
Wednesday night nobody told him what bus. He thinks it is about thirty minutes. It is seventy.
He wakes up at nine. Gets there at eleven fifteen. They tell him he has to reschedule and the next one is in five weeks.
Then he tells everybody the system is set up so you cannot win. And part of that is true, and it is also true that ninety minutes of planning on Wednesday night would have beaten it.
Both things are true at once. Holding both is the entire skill.
Spiritual Takeaway
He told people to sit down and do the math first
Jesus said suppose one of you wants to build a tower. Will he not first sit down and count the cost to see if he has enough to finish it? Otherwise he lays the foundation and cannot complete it, and everybody who walks past starts laughing at him, saying this man started something he could not finish.
That is the same man who told people to give everything and follow Him. He is not against big moves. He is against a big move nobody counted.
And He said it about following Him, which is the part people skip. He did not want anybody signing up on a feeling in a room and quitting in five weeks. He wanted them to look at what it costs first, out loud, and then decide.
That is what makes this different from a program that hypes you up. Nobody here is trying to get you excited. Excited runs out around week three. Counting the cost and choosing it anyway is what holds when nothing feels like anything.
Proverbs 21:5 says the plans of the diligent lead to profit, as surely as haste leads to poverty. Not the plans of the talented. The diligent, which is a word about doing the boring part over and over.
Get the one document you are missing. Find out what office, what it costs, what you need to bring, and what days they are open. Getting the information counts as the assignment if you cannot get there yet.
Take it one week at a time.
