Week 10 · Lesson 1

Battling the Habits That Hold You Back

Week 10 of 23 · Habits, Coping and Stress

What do you do when the room gets quiet?

Not when something is wrong. When nothing is happening. No plans, nobody texting, nothing to handle.

Whatever you reach for in that exact moment is the thing this lesson is about, and most people have never looked straight at it.

Key ConceptEvery Habit Is Doing a Job

Nobody keeps doing something that gives them nothing. If it is still in your life, it is paying you.

So the question is never why can I not stop. The question is what is it doing for me.

Some habits shut the noise off. Some fill time you do not know what to do with. Some make you feel like somebody. Some keep other people at a distance so nothing can get close enough to hurt.

Find the job and you will understand why willpower keeps failing. You have been trying to fire something without hiring a replacement.

You will not put anything down until something else is doing its job.

Journal Question

Pick one habit you would drop if you could. Write what job it is doing. Not what it costs you, what it does for you. Be honest, because the honest answer is the whole lesson.

Teaching PointHow a Habit Actually Runs

Every habit has three parts and they run in the same order every time.

1Something sets it off

A time of day. A place. A person. A feeling. Usually it is not even a big feeling, it is a small one. Bored. Tired. Alone. A little embarrassed about something that happened earlier.

2The move

What you do. This is the part everybody focuses on, and it is the least important part, because by the time you get here it is already running.

3The payoff

The relief. The quiet. The feeling of being somebody. It shows up fast, which is exactly why the whole thing keeps working, and it never lasts long enough.

Most people try to attack the move. That is the hardest place to win because it is the fastest part. The two places you can actually win are the first one and the last one. Change what sets it off, or find something else that pays.

Activity

Take your one habit and write out all three parts. What sets it off, what you do, what it pays you. Then write one thing that could realistically pay you something similar. It does not have to be as good. It has to exist.

ScenarioNine to Midnight

Most people can tell you exactly when their week goes wrong, and it is almost never a dramatic hour.

It is nine to midnight. Nothing scheduled. Everybody else is somewhere. The house is either too loud or too quiet. And there are three hours with nothing in them.

Nobody plans for that window. People plan for the big stuff, the court date, the interview, the situation with somebody. Then they lose the whole week in three empty hours they never even counted.

An empty hour is not neutral. For somebody carrying what you are carrying, an empty hour is a room where whatever you have been outrunning catches up. And then you reach for whatever makes it stop.

Journal Question

When is your window? Write the day and the hours. Then write what is usually in your head during it.

Spiritual Takeaway

The strongest man in the book had one door he never fixed

Samson was the strongest man anybody had ever seen. Nobody could take him in a fight and he never lost one. What took him down was not a fight.

Read the pattern. The same weakness, the same kind of situation, over and over, and every time it worked out he walked away thinking he had gotten past it. He kept getting away with it, and getting away with it is what kept him in it.

At the end, she asked him the same question four times. Four. He watched her use the answer against him three separate times before he gave her the real one, and he still gave it to her.

And the hardest line in the whole story is what happens after. It says he got up like he had before, and did not know that the Lord had left him. He did not feel it go. That is how it works. Nothing dramatic happened on the day it mattered, because everything that mattered had already happened on the ordinary days.

1 Corinthians 10:13 says there is no temptation that is not common, and that God always makes a way out. Always. But a way out is a door, and a door does you no good if you have never once looked for where it is before the room gets hot.

This week

Take your window, the empty hours, and put one thing in it. One. A gym, a job application, somebody’s house, a shift, a walk. Do not try to fix the habit this week. Just fill the hour it lives in.

Take it one week at a time.
