Facilitator certification

One day, then one observed delivery. Required with any kit.

$349 · Live and public, on demand, or on site at your location for a team.

The material is strong and it is not self running. Seven of the twenty four lessons reliably produce disclosure, and a facilitator who has not been trained on those seven will either shut a man down or go somewhere he is not qualified to go.

The day

What it covers.

  • The structure, and why it never changes.
  • The collected and uncollected split, and why breaking it once kills it everywhere.
  • The seven lessons that produce disclosure, and what to do in each.
  • Mandated reporting, and saying so at intake rather than in week nine.
  • Running the eight minute opening, which is where retention is won.
  • What may be adapted and what may never be.
  • The fidelity checklist and the adaptation register.

Seven of twenty four

The lessons where something comes out.

These are not the hard lessons. These are the ones where something surfaces. Have a second staff member in the building for each.

Lesson What surfaces What you do
1.1 Childhood abuse Acknowledge. Do not pursue detail in the room. Individual follow up within 24 hours. Reporting applies if a current minor is at risk.
1.2 Current violence in the home Stop the group process. Mandated reporting. Agency protocol, in writing, same day.
5.2 Co-parenting conflict, allegations in both directions Do not adjudicate. Do not take a side, including by nodding. Give the legal aid and domestic violence contacts to the whole room, so receiving one says nothing about any man.
9.1 Active cases, warrants, arrears You do not give legal advice. Not once, not as an aside. Refer. A live warrant is a real safety matter and an individual conversation before he leaves.
10.1 Serious harm he caused Hold it without absolving and without escalating. The most likely lesson for something never said out loud. Follow up within 24 hours is mandatory.
11.1 Active substance use, sometimes suicidal thinking Hand the referral list to the whole room at the start. Do not counsel, do not assess. If a man is in danger, leave the group process and follow the crisis protocol.
11.2 Reentry, supervision conditions Verify any planned contact against existing orders before encouraging it. Ask privately, before he leaves.

Capability, not credentials

What a facilitator has to be able to do.

  • Sit with a man crying and not fill the silence.
  • Say I do not know, and then go and find out.
  • Refuse to take a side in a co-parenting conflict, out loud, in a room that expects agreement.
  • Deliver Module 11.1 without moralizing and without minimizing, having decided in advance which of those he is more likely to do.
  • Follow through on an individual follow up within 24 hours, every time, without being chased.

The known risk. The strongest facilitators for this material are men who have been where the participants are. That is a real advantage and it comes with a real hazard: a man who has lived it will sometimes teach his own story instead of the lesson. It is named in training rather than discovered in month four.

Recertification

Annual. Supervisors observe one live session per facilitator per month, against the same checklist a facilitator uses on himself, which is what makes the two comparable.

Included

Technical assistance for as long as you run the program, and quarterly facilitator sessions.

Adaptation

Adaptation is permitted in delivery. Language, setting, scheduling, facilitator identity, supplementary discussion, examples and modality may all be adapted to the population and the site. Adaptation is not permitted in content. No required material may be omitted, reordered or substituted. Any proposed content change goes to the program director in writing and is entered in the adaptation register before it is delivered.
