This policy covers definingnarratives.org, operated by We The Revolt, Inc., a Florida 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation, EIN 99-2134150, at 361 NW 67th Street, Miami, FL 33150.

We hold records about children who are under state supervision. That fact shapes everything below. Where we had a choice between something convenient and something protective, we chose protective, and we have tried to say so plainly rather than in the language policies are usually written in.

What we collect

When a young person is referred to us, the referring officer, school or facility gives us their name, date of birth, phone number, email address where they have one, home address, the name and contact details of a parent or guardian, the referring agency and circuit, and any obligation a court has set. A photograph may be included so that a mentor can recognise them.

When somebody signs up for a course themselves, we collect their name, email address, date of birth and, if they give it, a phone number.

As somebody takes part, we record attendance, documented hours, which modules they have completed, forms they have signed, and notes staff make about their case.

We do not collect more than we need, and we do not sell anything to anybody.

Text messages

Mobile phone numbers are never shared with third parties or affiliates for marketing or promotional purposes.

No mobile information is sold, rented or traded. Numbers are shared only with the messaging provider that delivers the message on our behalf, and only for that purpose.

You come to receive texts by ticking an unticked box on our registration page. A referring officer, school or facility may record a phone number on the referral form they complete, and the person then completes that web form themselves before any message is sent.

We send one-time passcodes so somebody can reach their own record, reminders for sessions they have booked, consent links for a parent or guardian, and occasional notices about their own progress. Nothing promotional.

Message frequency varies. Most people receive fewer than four messages a month.

Message and data rates may apply.

Reply STOP to any message and we will stop texting that number. Reply HELP for help, or email [email protected]. Stopping texts does not remove you from the program; we will contact you another way.

Who sees it

Access is limited by role, and the limits are enforced by the software rather than by policy alone.

A participant sees only their own record.
A parent or guardian sees only their own child's attendance, hours and signed documents.
A probation officer sees only the young people assigned to them or to their unit.
A mentor sees only who they are assigned to, by first name and last initial.

Reports to a referring agency carry attendance, documented hours, module completion and whether obligations were met. They do not carry what a young person wrote or said.

Partner organisations

In some cities the program is delivered by a partner organisation under agreement with us, such as the Firehouse Community Arts Center in Chicago. Where that is the case, the partner delivering your sessions sees what they need in order to run them: attendance, participation and the practical details of a referral. They are bound by the same limits set out here.

Who else we share with

We share with the agency that referred a participant, where consent allows it and limited to the reporting above. We share with service providers who operate parts of the platform on our behalf, such as our email and messaging providers, and only so they can do that work.

We share when the law requires it, or where there is a genuine and immediate risk to somebody's safety.

We do not sell personal information. We do not share it for anybody else's advertising.

Consent, and taking it back

For a participant under eighteen, a parent or guardian signs a consent that says what may be shared and with whom. We record what they signed, when, and the exact version of the text they were shown, so it can always be checked against what was actually agreed.

A guardian can withdraw consent at any time, from their own page or by emailing us. Withdrawal is recorded as its own decision rather than by deleting the original.

How it is protected

Names, dates of birth, addresses and contact details are encrypted where they are stored. Every time somebody's record is read, not only when it is changed, that access is written to an audit log. The hours ledger is append-only and each entry is cryptographically linked to the one before it, so an alteration is detectable.

How long we keep it

We keep participation records for as long as the agency agreement and applicable law require, and then no longer. Where a juvenile record is sealed or expunged, we honour that.

Asking what we hold

A participant, or the parent or guardian of a participant under eighteen, can ask what we hold about them, ask for a correction, or ask us to stop contacting them. Email [email protected] and a person will answer.

Children

This program serves young people, many of them under eighteen, by design. We do not knowingly collect information from a child under thirteen except through a referral made by an agency with guardian consent on record.
