A father and his daughter, her arm around him, pointing ahead

Module 12 · The Men Around You · Lesson 1 of 2

You cannot do this alone and you have been trying

Every man in this course has been fathering with nobody to ask, and calling it independence.

Module 12 of 12

By the end of this lesson

  1. Say where independence ended and isolation started in your own history
  2. Call one man before you need him
  3. Name what has stopped you asking until now
1Nobody taught you and you did not ask

You were handed a child and no manual, and the man who should have shown you either was not there or was not worth copying.

So you have been improvising for years, guessing, and hiding the guessing, because admitting you do not know how to do this feels like admitting you should not have been trusted with it.

Every father you compare yourself to is also improvising. All of them. The confident ones are just better at the face.

2What you actually need

One man ahead of you who will tell you the truth. Not a mentor programme. One man, five or ten years further on, who has a child that still speaks to him.

One man beside you, in the same season, who you can text at eleven at night when it has gone badly and you need to say it to somebody.

And eventually one man behind you, because teaching it is what makes it stick in you, and because somebody younger is watching you already whether or not you agreed to it.

Three men. That is the whole structure and most men have none of them.

3Why you will not ask

Because asking means admitting, and admitting is the thing you were trained never to do.

Because you asked once and it did not go well, or you watched a man ask and get handled, and you filed it.

Because you are the one who helps, and there is no available role for you as the one who needs, and stepping into it feels like losing status you cannot afford to lose.

All of that is real. None of it changes the fact that you are trying to break a three generation pattern alone, using willpower that has already failed at smaller things.

4Go first

Nobody is coming to find you. Men do not get rescued from isolation, they walk out of it, and the walk starts with the exposed move.

One man. One true sentence about your actual life. Something small enough that you survive it landing badly.

Then a rhythm. An actual day, an actual time, because anything depending on whoever feels like reaching out dies in the first hard month, and the hard month is exactly when you need it.

It will feel forced for about two months. Everything real does at the start.

Independence and isolation look identical from the outside.

The workEight questions

Three are answered in your head and never collected. They are marked, so you know before you start which is which.

1Written

Name the man ahead of you. If there is nobody, write who could be, even if you barely know him.

2In your head. Nobody reads this

When did you last admit to another man that you did not know what you were doing?

3Choose one

Why have you not asked?

  • AI asked once and it did not go well
  • BI am the one who helps. There is no role for me as the one who needs
  • CPride. Straight pride
  • DI do not know any men I would trust with it
4Written

Name the man beside you. Same season, same mess, someone you could text at eleven at night.

5In your head. Nobody reads this

Who is watching you already, whether you agreed to it or not?

6Choose one

What would you actually text him if you did?

  • AThat I lost it with my kid today
  • BThat I have not seen them in weeks and I am avoiding it
  • CThat I do not know how to do this
  • DI would not send anything, and that is what I am changing
7Written

Write the first sentence you are sending, to a specific man, this week. Actual words.

8Written

Write the rhythm. A day, a time, and what it is. Not when we can, an actual slot.

DeeperThree reflections

Longer than the questions and harder. Nobody reads these but you. Write them anyway, because the ones you would not say out loud are the ones doing the damage.

  1. 1

Write about the man who should have taught you this, and what you would have wanted him to say.

  2. 2

Write about the last time you needed help and did not ask, and what it cost you.

  3. 3

Write what kind of man you would be to somebody five years behind you, and whether you are currently that man.

Hold this

Two are better than one. If one falls down the other lifts him up. Pity the man who falls and has nobody. And a cord of three strands is not quickly broken.

Ecclesiastes 4:9-12

Before you close this

Independence and isolation look identical from the outside

You have been calling it one thing while living the other, and so has every man sitting near you, which is why none of you has ever said it in a room together until now.

Nobody is coming to check on you. That is not self pity, it is a description of how it works for men over about nineteen. The first call has to go out from you, it will be uncomfortable, and it is roughly forty seconds long.

This week

Call one man before you need him. Nothing dramatic. Tell him you are doing this course and you want somebody to call when it gets heavy, and ask if that can be him.

Written for fathers who are still fighting.
