1You are about to blow up
A plan made while angry is a wish.
Right now. Go to the plan you wrote in 1.2. Do the physical thing on it. Out the door, around the block, or the call. Do not renegotiate it, because the version of you deciding right now is the one that is already moving.
Twenty seconds is the whole window. You get about that long between the heat and the door.
Hold this. Proverbs 29:11. A fool lets all of it out. This is three thousand years old. It is not a defect you invented.
Come back to lesson 1.2.
2You already blew up, and they saw it
An apology with no change in it is a request.
Right now. Do not disappear. Disappearing is worse than what just happened and it is what you want to do. Go back into the room within the hour.
Say the specific thing. Not sorry for everything. I yelled and I frightened you and that was not about you. Do not explain why. The explanation is for you, not for them.
Then say what you will do differently, and make it small enough that you will actually do it.
Hold this. He saw him a long way off and ran. Luke 15:20. The door is not shut on you either.
Come back to lessons 10.2 and 1.2.
3She is not answering and you are about to send something you will regret
Say the thing that is true about you.
Right now. Put it in your notes instead of in the message. Write the whole thing, all of it, unedited. Then wait twenty minutes and read it as if your child is going to see it one day, because they might.
Send the version that is about you or send nothing. Nothing is a real option and it is often the strong one.
Hold this. As far as it depends on you. Romans 12:18. Your half is the whole of what is available to you, and your half still counts.
Come back to lessons 6.1 and 5.2.
4Your child did not want to come
It does not get solved. It gets handled.
Right now. Do not interrogate them and do not punish it. Do not go quiet on them for a week to make a point.
Say one sentence. That is okay. I will be here next time. Then be there next time, exactly when you said.
Most of the time this is not about you. All of the time it feels like it is.
Hold this. Isaiah 32:2. Shade. They are testing whether you are still shade when they push.
Come back to lesson 5.1.
5There is a man in your child’s house
The title is not available to him.
Right now. You do not compete. You do not run him down where your child can hear it. You do not ask your child questions about him.
You be excellent in your own lane, consistently, for years. That is the long game and it is the only one that has ever been winnable here.
Come back to lesson 5.1.
6You have no money and they asked you for something
Broke is a condition, not an identity.
Right now. Tell them the truth in a sentence a child can hold. I cannot do that right now. Here is what I can do. Then do the instead, this week, so the honesty arrives attached to something real.
Do not go quiet. Do not stay away until you have it. The staying away costs a hundred times what the no costs.
Hold this. Matthew 6:32. Your Father knows what you need. The need is real and it is seen.
Come back to lessons 8.1 and 8.2.
7The fast money is in front of you
Free, not flashy.
Right now. Do the arithmetic out loud. Name the number of years. Then say the age your child will be when you get out.
Call the man whose name you wrote in Module 12 before you decide anything. Not after.
Hold this. Proverbs 15:16. Better a little without the trouble than a lot with it.
Come back to lesson 8.2.
8You want to use
You cannot be present and numb at the same time.
Right now. Name the feeling underneath it out loud. Not the situation. The feeling. It is usually one of four: I cannot sleep, I cannot sit with what I did, I am angry, I am afraid and there is nobody to tell.
Then call one person. Not to be talked out of it. Just so that somebody else is holding it with you for the next hour.
If this has beaten you before, this is the week to call the number in the back of this book. That is not a defeat. For some men it is the biggest fathering act available to them right now.
Hold this. John 4:13. Everybody who drinks this water will be thirsty again. It was never going to finish the job. And 1 Corinthians 10:13, there is a way out, and the way out is usually a door and a person.
Come back to lesson 11.1.
9You have not seen them in a long time and you do not know how to start
Coming back is not a moment. It is a schedule.
Right now. Do not plan the big reunion. Set one small repeating thing you can hit fifteen times running. Tuesday at six, a call. That is the whole plan.
Say the plain sentence. I was not there. That was not your fault. I am here now and here is what that looks like. Under thirty words. Then stop talking.
Hold this. Joel 2:25. The years are not the last word.
Come back to lesson 11.2.
10The court went against you
Being right does not appear on the record.
Right now. Do not stop paying. Do not stop showing up. Both of those feel like the only leverage you have left and both of them make the next hearing worse.
Write down what happened today while it is fresh, including the date. Then make one call this week to the person whose job this is.
Hold this. Nehemiah asked for letters before he laid a stone. Nehemiah 2:7. Dealing with the paperwork is what a builder does first.
Come back to lesson 9.1.
11They said they hate you
Name the behavior. Never the child.
Right now. Do not answer it with what you feel. Say I hear you, and I am not going anywhere. Then go anywhere else in the house and let it be over.
A child says that to the person they are most certain will still be there. That is not a comfort in the moment. It is true anyway.
Come back to lessons 6.2 and 3.1.
12You just realized you have been gone while sitting right there
Presence is a skill, not a feeling.
Right now. Ten minutes. Phone in another room. They pick what happens and you follow.
You do not have to feel like a father to act like one. It runs the other direction, always, and the feeling shows up late and quietly.
Hold this. Deuteronomy 6:7. When you sit, when you walk, when you lie down. Ordinary time is the instruction.
Come back to lesson 3.2.
13You are looking at your father in your own face
The pattern transmits. The guilt does not have to.
Right now. Say out loud what you just saw yourself do and who you got it from. Naming it is half. The other half is the next ninety seconds, where you do the other thing instead.
You will do it again after this. That is not failure, that is the shape of it, and the men who break these things are the ones who kept going after the second time.
Hold this. Ezekiel 18:20. The son does not carry the father’s guilt. Jeremiah 31:29. They will not say that proverb anymore.
Come back to lessons 4.1 and 4.2.
14You want to quit
Independence and isolation look identical from the outside.
Right now. Call one man from the group. Not to be convinced. Tell him you are done and let him hear you say it out loud, because most of what makes a man quit does not survive being said to somebody.
Hold this. Ecclesiastes 4:10. Pity the man who falls and has nobody.
