Part oneThe twenty-four lines

These are yours now

You wrote most of the work in this book yourself, and these are the twenty-four things it was built on. You will not remember the lessons. You will remember these, and that is enough, because each one of them has a whole hour behind it that you already did.

  1. 1.1Being failed does not excuse failing.
  2. 1.2A plan made while angry is a wish.
  3. 2.1What kept you alive out there is not neutral in here.
  4. 2.2A supervised hour is still an hour of fathering.
  5. 3.1A child does not remember instructions. A child remembers weather.
  6. 3.2Presence is a skill, not a feeling.
  7. 4.1Default is a decision. It just gets made for you.
  8. 4.2It breaks on ordinary Tuesdays.
  9. 5.1It does not get solved. It gets handled.
  10. 5.2The relationship may never be repaired. The arrangement still has to work.
  11. 6.1Say the thing that is true about you.
  12. 6.2Name the behavior. Never the child.
  13. 7.1Tenderness is not the opposite of strength.
  14. 7.2They are taking notes and they do not know they are taking notes.
  15. 8.1Broke is a condition, not an identity.

Part twoTwelve prayers

You do not have to say these

Nobody is checking and nothing in this course depends on it. They are here because a lot of men get to the end of a hard lesson and want to say something and do not have any words, and their whole life nobody handed them any. These are words. Use them, change them, or leave them.

Module 1

God, I have been hiding and calling it being fine. Here I am. Show me what I have been carrying and do not let me look away from it.

Module 2

Make me shade. My hands know how to be hard and I do not know how to put that down. Teach me at home what I never had to learn out there.

Module 3

Help me see the child in front of me instead of the one in my head. Slow me down to their size.

Module 4

What was handed to me is in my house tonight. I am not condemned for it and I am holding it. Let it stop here. Let me be the one it stops with.

Module 5

I cannot fix this and I can do my half. Keep my child out of the middle of it. Keep me from using them to win.

Module 6

Make me slow. Quick to hear and slow to say the thing I will not be able to take back.

Module 7

You wept and you were not weak. Do that in me. Let my strength be the kind that can put the towel on.

Module 8

You know what we need. I am tired of carrying the number in my head into their room. Take it at the door.

Module 9

Give me the nerve to walk into the building. Let me be the kind of father the record can see.

Module 10

I have not forgiven myself for it and I have been calling that humility. It is not. Let me put it down and go and do the work instead.

Module 11

I keep going back to the same well. Give me the way out, and let me take it when you open the door.

Module 12

I have been alone a long time and I called it strength. Send me one man, and make me one for somebody else.
