Module 11 · What You Reach For · Lesson 1 of 2

The thing that takes the edge off

Every man has something he uses to get through the night. The question is what it is costing and who is paying.

Module 11 of 12

By the end of this lesson

  1. Name what you reach for and the feeling that arrives just before it
  2. Count what it costs in a normal month, in money and in hours
  3. Tell one person the true version
1Nobody starts out trying to escape

It usually begins as relief. Something took the edge off on a night that was too much, and it worked, and that is the entire hook. It worked.

For some men it is drinking. For some it is smoking. For some it is pills that started legitimately. For some it is a woman, or the scroll, or the pornography, or the gambling, or the game system until four in the morning.

And for some it is work. Fourteen hours a day, called responsibility, doing exactly the same job as the bottle.

The category is not the point. The point is that there is something you reach for when the feeling gets too big, and you have never once said out loud what it is.

2What it is actually costing

Whatever it is, it takes time, money, and attention out of the same account your child is drawing on. There is one account. There has never been more than one.

It also takes you out of the room while you are still in it. A father who is high, drunk, absorbed, or three hours into a phone is physically present and functionally gone, and children experience that as absence, not as relaxation.

Then there is what it makes you afterward. Short. Irritable. Ashamed. And shame sends men further into whatever they were already using, which is the loop, and the loop is why people who are not weak stay stuck for years.

None of this makes you a bad man. It makes you a man carrying something with a tool that does not work.

3What it is doing for you

Do not go straight to stopping. Go to what it is for.

Numbing is a solution to something. Find out what. It is usually one of a short list. I cannot sleep. I cannot sit still with what I did. I am angry all the time. I am terrified and there is nobody to say it to.

When you know what it is for, you can go looking for something that does that job and does not cost your child anything. That may be a person, a practice, a room full of men, a doctor, or God, and for most men it turns out to be more than one of those.

You are not going to think your way out of this alone. Everything you have tried alone is what got you here.

4When it is bigger than a habit

There is a line, and men are the last to see it in themselves. When you have tried to stop and could not. When it is costing you money you needed. When you use it in the morning. When people who love you have stopped saying anything about it because they gave up.

That is not a discipline problem and no amount of manning up will fix it. That is a thing you get help for, the same way you would get a bone set.

Your facilitator has the names and numbers. Ask after the session if you do not want to ask in front of the room. That is completely acceptable and it happens every cycle.

Getting help for this is not the opposite of being a strong father. For some of you it is the single largest fathering act available to you right now.

You cannot be present and numb at the same time.

The workEight questions

Three are answered in your head and never collected. They are marked, so you know before you start which is which.

1Choose one

What do you reach for when the pressure gets high?

  • ASomething I drink or smoke or take
  • BThe phone, the scroll, the screen
  • CWomen, or the internet version of it
  • DWork, and I call it being responsible
2In your head. Nobody reads this

Name it exactly. How much, how often, and how long it has been going on.

3Written

What is the feeling that shows up right before you reach for it. Name the feeling, not the situation.

4In your head. Nobody reads this

Has your child ever seen you in that state. What did they do.

5Choose one

What is it actually doing for you?

  • AHelping me sleep
  • BKeeping me from thinking about something
  • CMaking the anger sit down
  • DNothing anymore. It is just what I do now
6Written

Write what it costs in a normal month. Money, hours, and what it takes out of you the next day.

7Written

Write one thing that has ever done the same job without the cost. It can be small. Write it anyway.

8Written

Write the name of one person you are willing to tell the truth to about this, and when you are going to do it.

If any part of this sat too close, tell your facilitator. There is a list of people whose whole job is this, and asking for that list is a normal thing that happens in this program.

DeeperThree reflections

Longer than the questions and harder. Nobody reads these but you. Write them anyway, because the ones you would not say out loud are the ones doing the damage.

  1. 1

Write about the first time it worked. What was happening in your life that week.

  2. 2

Write about the worst thing it has cost you so far. Do not soften it and do not explain it.

  3. 3

Write a week of your life without it. Be realistic about which nights would be hardest and what you would do on those nights instead.

Hold this

Everybody who drinks this water will be thirsty again. He is not condemning her for being thirsty. He is telling her the well she keeps going back to was never going to finish the job. And no temptation has taken you that is not common to man, and there is a way out, and the way out is usually a door and a person.

John 4:13-14, 1 Corinthians 10:13

Before you close this

You cannot be present and numb at the same time

That is the whole lesson. Everything else in this course asks you to be in the room with your attention on your child, and there is no way to do that from behind something.

You are not being asked to be perfect by Friday. You are being asked to say the true thing to one person, which is the step every man who ever got out of this took first, and none of them wanted to take it either.

This week

Tell one person the true version. Not the whole story if you cannot. The true version of one part of it.

Written for fathers who are still fighting.
