A father out on a street with his daughter on his shoulders

Module 9 · The Systems Around Your Child · Lesson 2 of 2

The people holding your child’s file

There is a school, a doctor, and probably a caseworker who all know your child. Right now most of them do not know you exist.

Module 9 of 12

By the end of this lesson

  1. List every adult with professional responsibility for your child
  2. Get your name into one file you are currently missing from
  3. Write your child’s doctor, allergies and medication, or write unknown and go find out
1Somebody is already writing about your child

Your child has a file. Probably several. There is a school record, a medical record, and for some of you a case file with a name on it that is not yours.

Everything in those files was written by adults who make decisions about your child’s life. Where they get placed, what services they get, what happens after an incident.

If you are not in any of those files, you are not a factor in any of those decisions. Not because anybody decided against you. Because the box for you was empty and the work moved on.

That is fixable and it is mostly free and it takes phone calls.

2The school

Call the front office and ask to be added as a parent contact. Ask for the grades, the attendance, the discipline reports, and the same emails they send her.

You are usually entitled to that as a parent. There are situations where a court order says otherwise, and if that applies to you, you already know.

Then go to one thing. A conference, a game, a meeting about services. Show up once and you stop being a name on a form and start being a face they can put to it.

And meet the teacher. One conversation, in person, where you say who you are and give a number that works. Teachers remember the fathers who did that, and there are not many of them, and it changes how your child is talked about in that building.

3The doctor, the caseworker, the officer

If your child has a caseworker, get the name and the number and use it. Ask what the plan is and ask what they need from you. Then do that thing and tell them you did it.

If there is a case plan, ask for your copy of it. Men assume the plan belongs to the mother and that they are a visitor to it. Frequently there are tasks on that plan that are yours, with dates attached, and the record of whether you did them is what gets read out at the next hearing. Ask which ones are yours, in writing, and keep the proof of every one you complete.

If there is a probation officer involved, on your side or your child’s, the same rule applies. The people in these systems are managing more cases than they can hold. The parent who calls, does what he said, and calls back becomes the easy one, and easy gets you information and gets you consulted.

Doctors are the one men skip entirely. Go to one appointment. Learn the medications, the allergies, the doctor’s name. If your child is ever hurt and you are the adult in the room, all of that becomes urgent in about four seconds.

None of this requires you to be impressive. It requires you to be reachable and to follow through twice in a row, which is rarer than you think.

4Being a father the system can see

There is a version of you that exists in these buildings, made of your record and whatever the mother has told them and whatever the last thing that happened was.

You do not get to erase that version. You do get to add to it, and the addition is made out of attendance and follow through and nothing else.

This is not about performing for the system. It is that your child is inside these systems either way, and a child whose father is present in the file gets treated differently by every adult who opens it.

Do it for that reason. If it also helps you in a hearing one day, take that too.

Reachable is a form of love that gets written down.

The workEight questions

Three are answered in your head and never collected. They are marked, so you know before you start which is which.

1Written

Name your child’s school and the teacher they have this year. If you cannot, write that instead.

2Choose one

Are you on the school contact list?

  • AYes, and they call me
  • BYes, but they always call her first
  • CNo
  • DI do not know
3In your head. Nobody reads this

Which of these buildings do you avoid, and what is it actually about?

4Written

List every adult who has professional responsibility for your child right now. Names where you have them, roles where you do not.

5Choose one

When something happens at school, who gets the call?

  • AMe
  • BHer
  • CHer mother or somebody else in her family
  • DNobody reaches anybody and it gets handled without us
6In your head. Nobody reads this

What do you think is written about you in your child’s file.

7Written

Write which one system you are dealing with first, and the exact ask you are making when you call.

8Written

Write your child’s doctor, allergies, and any medication they take. Whatever you do not know, write the word unknown and go find it.

DeeperThree reflections

Longer than the questions and harder. Nobody reads these but you. Write them anyway, because the ones you would not say out loud are the ones doing the damage.

  1. 1

Write about the last time an institution made a decision about your life without you in the room. What it did to how you deal with them now.

  2. 2

Write about who showed up for you at school, if anybody did, and what it meant that day.

  3. 3

Write what you want the file on your child to say about their father in three years, and what has to happen between now and then for it to say that.

Hold this

Which of you, wanting to build a tower, does not first sit down and count what it will cost. Sitting down and counting is a spiritual act. Nobody ever told you that.

Luke 14:28

Before you close this

Reachable is a form of love that gets written down

Most of what these systems record about a father is whether he could be reached and whether he did what he said. That is a low bar and it is also a real one, and men who clear it get treated as parents.

You have spent your life being processed by these buildings. This is the first time you are walking into one on behalf of somebody else, and that is a different thing entirely, and you will feel the difference.

This week

One building. One call. Ask for one specific thing and write down the name of the person who answered.

Written for fathers who are still fighting.
