Module 5 · The First Kill · Lesson 1 of 2
How it learns you
The thing you are about to name has been studying you for years, and it is better at this than you are.
Module 5 of 6
It knows your stress hours. It knows which arguments leave you most likely to reach. It can tell the difference between the tired that fights and the tired that does not, and it waits for the second one.
That is not superstition, it is conditioning. Every time you fed it under a particular condition, you strengthened the link between that condition and the reaching. Do that a few thousand times and you have built something that responds to your life faster than your deciding mind can.
This is why men lose fights they genuinely intended to win. The determination lives in one system and the reaching lives in an older, faster one. The older one moves first, and by the time the deciding part of you arrives, you are already three steps in and constructing the reason.
You are not weak. You are outgunned in a specific, describable way, and describable means addressable.
There is a sentence it uses on you. Every man has one. Almost no man has ever written it down.
It is never you should do the wrong thing. It is subtler and it is tailored to you specifically. You have earned this. Nobody is being hurt. You will deal with it properly next week. You are already this far in. It is not as bad as what other men do. God knows your heart.
Write the actual sentence, in the words it uses, because a lie loses most of its power the moment it is on paper in daylight. What sounds reasonable at eleven at night reads as obviously ridiculous at nine in the morning, and the only way to get that comparison is to have written it down while it was talking.
The hardest part is that it does not feel like an invader. It feels like you.
That is what long participation does. What you repeat becomes what you are familiar with. What you are familiar with becomes what you assume is your nature. And eventually a man defends the thing that is eating him, because he believes attacking it means attacking himself.
It is not you. It is something you have fed so long that it learned to speak in your voice.
Killing it is not self destruction. It is the opposite. Everything underneath it is what God actually made, and no man alive has ever seen that part of himself clearly while the other thing was still eating.
Every man doing this has an accounting he has never done, because doing it would require admitting the scale.
The hours. Add them up honestly for one year. Then multiply by however long this has been running.
The presence. Not the times you were away, the times you were in the room and not there, and who was in the room noticing.
The trajectory. What you would have built with that attention. Who you would have become. Not as self punishment, as arithmetic, because a man does not move until the cost of staying exceeds the cost of leaving, and he cannot compare them if he has never once totalled one side.
The workEight questions
Three are answered in your head and never collected. They are marked, so you know before you start which is which.
Name your first prey. The thing that wears your face and serves your flesh. Say what it actually is, not the category.
How many people know?
How does it get you?
- AIt waits until I am tired
- BIt waits until I am alone
- CIt waits until I feel I have earned it
- DIt does not wait. It has a schedule and I keep it
Write the exact sentence it uses on you. Its words, not a summary. This is the most useful thing on this page.
How old were you the first time?
What is it protecting you from feeling?
- ABeing alone in a house full of people
- BSomething that happened that I have never processed
- CFailing at the thing I said I would be
- DNothing. It stopped being about feeling anything a long time ago
Do the accounting. Hours in a year, multiplied by the years. Write the number and sit with it before you write anything else.
It is not you, it is something wearing your voice. Write who is underneath it. What is that man like, and what has he never been allowed to do?
DeeperThree reflections
Longer than the questions and harder. Nobody reads these but you. Write them anyway, because the ones you would not say out loud are the ones doing the damage.
- 1
Write the full truth about the thing you named, once, on a page nobody reads. Then decide what you are going to do with having written it.
- 2
Write about who was in the room while you were not there. What did they learn about their own worth from your attention being elsewhere.
- 3
Write about who you become if this keeps living. Be specific about the year, and about what is gone by then.
Before you close this
You are not being asked to try harder
Everything above was written to corner you, because a man does not change
what he will not name. But conviction without Christ is only shame with better
vocabulary, and shame has never made a man free. It has only ever made him
quieter.
He walked into hell unarmed and came out holding the keys. That is not
encouragement. It is the reason the thing you just named can actually die
instead of being managed for another ten years.
Take the last question you answered. Tell one man. Do the one small thing
you wrote down. Not the whole plan. The one thing.
Written for men who are done pretending.
