Module 4 · Brotherhood in the Hunt · Lesson 2 of 2
Covenant, not company
You have men around you. That is not the same thing, and the difference is going to cost or save you.
Module 4 of 6
Most men have people and are still completely alone, which is why they conclude that brotherhood does not work for them.
You have men you laugh with. Men you work with. Men who would show up if something serious happened. That is not this. Proximity is not covenant.
The test is simple and it is uncomfortable. Is there a man who can tell you something true that you do not want to hear, and you will still be there next week.
If nobody has that standing, you do not have brotherhood. You have an audience. And an audience will never save you, because an audience is the thing you are performing for.
Brotherhood is not encouragement. Encouragement is cheap and everybody has some.
Covering is telling a man the truth knowing he may not speak to you for a month. It is driving across the city at eleven at night. It is asking the second question when the first answer was fine and you both know fine is not true.
It is staying while he is unpleasant, and he will be unpleasant, because men who are actually being reached are almost always hostile first. That hostility is not rejection. It is the sound of something being touched that has not been touched in years.
Most brotherhood dies right there, at the hostility, because the other man took it personally and left. Knowing it is coming is most of the battle.
Most men reading this cannot fill three names, and it needs saying plainly so no man concludes he is uniquely broken. This is the normal condition of men your age. It is not a personal defect. It is a generation of men who were never shown how.
You do not find this. You start it. And you start it by going first, which is the part nobody wants, because going first is the exposed position and there is no way to make it safe.
One man. One true thing, small enough that you survive it landing badly. Then a rhythm, an actual day and an actual time, because anything depending on whoever feels like reaching out will not survive a hard month, and the hard month is precisely when you need it.
It will feel forced for about two months. Everything real does, at the start.
Two are better than one, because when one falls the other can lift him up. That is not sentiment, it is a survival specification.
But it goes further than rescue. Iron sharpens iron, and sharpening is friction. It is not comfortable and it is not supposed to be. A man who only has men who agree with him is not being sharpened, he is being flattered, and flattery has ended more men than opposition ever has.
The Kingdom does not need lone hunters. It needs packs. Men who hunt together, heal together, and refuse to leave one behind.
And here is what you may not have considered. Somebody is waiting for you to be that man for them. You are reading this as the one who needs covering. You are also the one somebody else has been praying would show up.
The workEight questions
Three are answered in your head and never collected. They are marked, so you know before you start which is which.
Name the men who cover your blind side. Actual names. If you cannot fill three lines, leave them empty, because the empty lines are the answer.
When did a man last tell you something true that you did not want to hear?
What do you actually have right now?
- AAn audience I perform for
- BOne real man and I have been neglecting him
- CMen who would come to a funeral but not to a crisis
- DNothing, and I have been calling that independence
Men who are being reached are hostile first. Write about the last time somebody got close and you pushed. What did you say to make them stop?
Who is disappearing behind their grind right now while you have not called?
What stops you going first?
- AIt is the exposed position and I do not do exposed
- BI do not know what to say and I would rather say nothing
- CI have been the one who reaches out before and it was not returned
- DPride. Plain pride. I want to be asked
Write what you are willing to commit to one man, and what you would need from him. Both halves, in plain words.
Somebody is waiting for you to be that man for them. Write his name and what you think he is carrying.
DeeperThree reflections
Longer than the questions and harder. Nobody reads these but you. Write them anyway, because the ones you would not say out loud are the ones doing the damage.
- 1
Write the message you would send to one man this week if you were not afraid of how it would land. Then decide whether you are sending it.
- 2
Write about a time you were covered by somebody, what it did, and whether you ever told them.
- 3
Name what would have to be true about a man before you told him everything, and then ask yourself honestly whether you are that man for anybody.
Before you close this
You are not being asked to try harder
Everything above was written to corner you, because a man does not change
what he will not name. But conviction without Christ is only shame with better
vocabulary, and shame has never made a man free. It has only ever made him
quieter.
He walked into hell unarmed and came out holding the keys. That is not
encouragement. It is the reason the thing you just named can actually die
instead of being managed for another ten years.
Take the last question you answered. Tell one man. Do the one small thing
you wrote down. Not the whole plan. The one thing.
Written for men who are done pretending.
