Module 2 · The Hunter's Eye · Lesson 2 of 2
The covenant
Deciding once, in daylight, so you are not deciding at midnight when your judgement is worth nothing.
Module 2 of 6
Before you were old enough to choose what you were looking at, you had already completed a curriculum nobody admits to teaching.
From what was on in the house. From how the men around you talked when they thought it did not count. From what happened to somebody you knew and how the adults handled it, or did not.
You are not responsible for what you were taught. You are entirely responsible for what you keep.
And most men have never examined the syllabus. They just kept running the program, because it was installed early enough to feel like personality rather than instruction.
Guarding your eyes is not pretending desire is not there. Desire is not the problem. Desire aimed by somebody else is the problem.
Practically, this is boring, and boring is precisely why men skip it in favour of something that feels more spiritual.
It is deleting the app rather than promising to use it less. It is not being alone with a phone after midnight, because that is your hour and you have always known it is your hour. It is handing one man real access and telling him the truth on a schedule instead of when you feel like it.
None of that is warfare the way men like to picture warfare. It is logistics. And the man who does the logistics beats the man who prays harder and changes nothing. Every time. It is not close.
Job said he made a covenant with his eyes. Not a promise. A covenant.
The difference matters. A promise is renewed in the moment, which means it is tested at the exact hour you are least equipped to keep it. A covenant is decided once, in daylight, by the version of you who is thinking clearly, and the version of you at midnight does not get a vote.
You already do this in other areas without noticing. You do not renegotiate whether to hit your child every time you are angry. That was settled long ago, so anger does not get a vote.
This has to move into that category. Not a thing you resist. A thing that was decided.
This is not about becoming harmless. It is about becoming useful.
A man whose eyes are clean can be in a room with a woman and actually see a person. He can raise a daughter who never learns to manage his attention. He can be trusted with other men's wives, other men's daughters, other men's confidences.
That trust is the entire currency every other thing you want to do is built on. Ministry, mentorship, leadership, fatherhood, all of it runs on being a man who is safe in a room.
So this is not God taking something from you. It is God making you load bearing.
The workEight questions
Three are answered in your head and never collected. They are marked, so you know before you start which is which.
Who taught you what a woman is for? Name the source. A person, a house, a screen, a room.
What part of that are you still running?
What have you been calling a promise that needs to become a covenant?
- AI will not look at that anymore
- BI will be home when I said I would be home
- CI will tell somebody when I slip
- DI will not touch my phone after a certain hour
Write the three logistics you are changing this week. Not intentions. Access, hours, devices, routes, who holds what.
Which one of those three did you already start negotiating with while reading it?
Who gets real access to check on you?
- AOne man who already has it
- BOne man I have in mind but have not asked
- CNobody, and I am about to say I do not need that
- DMy wife, which is not the same thing and I know it
Job decided once, in daylight. Write your covenant in one sentence, in your own words, in language you would not be embarrassed to read to another man.
This makes you load bearing. Write who is depending on you being a man who is safe in a room, and what changes for them if you become one.
DeeperThree reflections
Longer than the questions and harder. Nobody reads these but you. Write them anyway, because the ones you would not say out loud are the ones doing the damage.
- 1
Write the letter you would want your son to read about this, in his words, at the age he is now.
- 2
Name the moment you realised your relationship to this had changed from occasional to structural. What was happening in your life that month.
- 3
Write what you want to be true about you in a room with a woman in five years, and what has to die between now and then for it to be true.
Before you close this
You are not being asked to try harder
Everything above was written to corner you, because a man does not change
what he will not name. But conviction without Christ is only shame with better
vocabulary, and shame has never made a man free. It has only ever made him
quieter.
He walked into hell unarmed and came out holding the keys. That is not
encouragement. It is the reason the thing you just named can actually die
instead of being managed for another ten years.
Take the last question you answered. Tell one man. Do the one small thing
you wrote down. Not the whole plan. The one thing.
Written for men who are done pretending.
