The Hunt, manhood

Module 2 · The Hunter's Eye · Lesson 1 of 2

What you look at is what you become

You are not fighting a behavior. You are fighting an appetite you feed every night.

Module 2 of 6

Watch this first
1The chain nobody shows you

This is not a rule somebody invented to control men. It is a description of how you are built.

Attention is not neutral. What you look at repeatedly trains what you find normal. What you find normal trains what you want. What you want drives what you do, long before you have consciously decided anything at all.

By the time a choice arrives at the front of your mind, it has already been shaped by ten thousand inputs you never once classified as choices.

This is why sincere men lose. He is fighting at the wrong end of the chain. He is trying to control the behavior at eleven at night while feeding the appetite that produces it every day at lunch.

2Nothing stays where it started

Here is the part nobody warns you about, and it is the part that eventually terrifies a man.

Whatever you use to get a certain feeling stops producing that feeling at the same dose. So the dose moves. What shocked you at fourteen is background noise by twenty two. What you swore you would never look at is a Tuesday now.

You never decided that. You never sat down and chose the escalation. It happened in increments small enough that no single one registered as a decision, which is exactly how a man ends up somewhere he would have been horrified by, having never once made a choice he would call wrong.

So stop asking whether it is under control. Ask whether it has moved. If it has moved, that is the answer, whatever you have been telling yourself.

3What it is actually doing for you

Concede this before anything else, because a man will not deal honestly with something he has to pretend is worthless.

It works. It shuts the noise off. It gives you a hit of being wanted with none of the risk of being known. It is the one thing that is entirely yours, that nobody manages, that asks nothing of you and never tells you that you failed.

For a man who is managed all day and known by nobody, that is not nothing. That is the most reliable relationship in his life.

So the question is never why are you so weak. The question is what job is this doing, and what would have to be true for you not to need it done.

Because until something else does that job, you will not put it down. You will put it down for eleven days and pick it up on the twelfth, and then hate yourself, and the hating drives you straight back to the only thing that turns the hating off.

4The cycle that keeps you

Look at the loop honestly, because most men have never drawn it.

Pressure builds. You reach. Relief arrives. Shame follows. Shame is unbearable, so you reach again for the one thing that reliably silences it. The thing that caused the shame is the thing that treats the shame.

That is not weakness. That is a closed system, and willpower has never once broken a closed system from the inside.

Which is why the answer cannot be try harder. The answer has to come in from outside the loop, and there is only one thing that has ever done that.

The workEight questions

Three are answered in your head and never collected. They are marked, so you know before you start which is which.

1Written

What are you letting in every day? Be specific. Not screen time. The actual thing you go to.

2In your head. Nobody reads this

What hour does it usually happen?

3Choose one

Has it moved from where it started?

  • AYes, and I know exactly when it moved
  • BYes, but I have never let myself look at that
  • CNo, but I have had to work harder to keep it there
  • DI genuinely do not know, and that is its own answer
4Written

What job does it do for you? Answer it seriously. Noise, loneliness, being wanted, control, escape. Name it.

5In your head. Nobody reads this

Who would you be if you were not hiding it?

6Choose one

Where does the shame take you afterward?

  • AStraight back to the same thing
  • BInto being harsh with somebody who did nothing
  • CInto promises I have made and broken before
  • DInto church, where I perform harder than usual
7Written

Draw your loop. Pressure, reach, relief, shame, reach again. Write what sits in each position for you specifically.

8Written

Willpower has never broken a closed system from inside it. Write what you have been expecting yourself to do alone that you were never built to do alone.

DeeperThree reflections

Longer than the questions and harder. Nobody reads these but you. Write them anyway, because the ones you would not say out loud are the ones doing the damage.

  1. 1

Write about what you saw before you were old enough to choose what you were seeing, and what it taught you about what a woman is for.

  2. 2

Write the full honest account of how far it has moved since it started. Nobody reads this. Write it anyway, because you have never once seen the whole distance in one place.

  3. 3

If your eyes were clean for a year, name what you would finally be able to see that you cannot see now.

Before you close this

You are not being asked to try harder

Everything above was written to corner you, because a man does not change
what he will not name. But conviction without Christ is only shame with better
vocabulary, and shame has never made a man free. It has only ever made him
quieter.

He walked into hell unarmed and came out holding the keys. That is not
encouragement. It is the reason the thing you just named can actually die
instead of being managed for another ten years.

This week

Take the last question you answered. Tell one man. Do the one small thing
you wrote down. Not the whole plan. The one thing.

Written for men who are done pretending.
